David, so if you put the drive which is jumpered to slave and connect it to the
end of the cable (instead of the middle connector), it get detected properly,
right?
For 80c and >udma33, putting a single device in the middle connector (be it
master or slave) is not allowed. The unterminated aft part of the cable
interferes with signaling, so the end connector should always be occupied (M/S
doesn't matter). It's quite unusual for PIO to fail tho. The PIO protocol is
interlocked and doesn't usually get affected much by signal degradation of this
type.
At any rate, it basically is wrong hardware configuration which might or might
not work depending on your luck, or more accurately combination of controller,
cable, the attached device and alignment of the stars. I'm resolving this as
INVALID. Feel free to re-open if there's something I missed. Thanks.
