As mention in earlie comments this is a Gigabyte model GA-MA790X-DS4 model with
a SB600. Has the driver changed in the new Kernel?? As to Joris, it would make
sense why the CD drive starts in the beginning and hangs if the driver isn't
recognizing the PATA device. The bios actually provides the initial inertial
here to boot the disk. What appears to be happening here is that the device
isn't recognized by the driver in the new kernel, at that point a live CD
cannot be loaded. Once the system is installed it appears PATA devices are not
recognized on the SB600.

Are you asking Shane to post "lspci-nn"..BTW-- I tried to run the LIVE CD under
failsafe and had the same issues.
