We want to support the gnome-volume-manager gconf entries for people installing Banshee on older distros.
So, it really depends if you want to fix things upstream or to fix this in openSUSE/SLE :-) If you do things upstream, then you can do whatever you want, but if it's in openSUSE, the right way to set the default value of gconf keys which are not application-specific is really in gconf2-branding-openSUSE
Is the new way some text/xml file specific to nautilus? It's been several weeks since I was looking at this.
The new way (for media players, I assume) works with the mime/type. You just define the default value for a mime type (x-content/audio-player in this case).
