Although this may be moot if openSUSE shouldn't be installing the pae kernel on
all x86 systems after all, I investigated further the observation I mentioned
in comment #11.
What I found is that the ACPI mode is discerned by executing the inw
instruction (with port 0xfe10 on this machine). The result with the default
kernel is 0x0000; the result with the pae kernel is 0xffff. This erroneous
state information prevents the "transition" from taking place with the pae
kernel.
For comparison, on the Athlon 1333 machine the result from the same inw
instruction is 0x0000; this is the same with either the default or the pae
kernel.
