This is a long existing bug I have encountered with different 64 bit machines (alpha, amd64). I have found it is sufficient to mask open flags in rmt.c (see diff). Note: The diff is based on rmt.c dated from 2000 (SuSE 7.1 on Alpha). At that time rmt was part of the dump package (now star). 2004 rmt was again/still broken on SuSE 9.1 on amd64. I simply recompiled my version of rmt.c. Updating to openSuSE 10.3 the same happened.
