Re comment #2:
Apology taken.
## CONFIGURATION ##
Indeed it's a configuration that causes the DHCP server (dnsmasq 2.41 as
provided by Ubuntu, in this case) to send bogus responses; the configuration
however was suggested in dnsmasq's default/example configuration for serving to
Windows clients - these (Win XP Pro, perhaps also Win 2000) accept the 0-sized
option 47. For background information, see
http://lists.thekelleys.org.uk/pipermail/dnsmasq-discuss/2008q3/002400.html
I've already contacted Simon Kelley (dnsmasq maintainer) about this "offending"
suggestion in the configuration file
http://lists.thekelleys.org.uk/pipermail/dnsmasq-discuss/2008q3/002398.html
and he suggested to change the configuration for the next dnsmasq release:
http://lists.thekelleys.org.uk/pipermail/dnsmasq-discuss/2008q3/002399.html
(ISC dhcpd V3.0.6 as shipped with openSUSE 11.0 doesn't send option 47 if
empty, even if requested by the client.)
## PATCH AND INCONSISTENCIES ##
Note that openSUSE's network scripts allow using dhclient instead of dhcpcd,
which, when used (dhclient) then apparently does not support Samba
reconfiguration. So perhaps the fillup-templates alongside dhclient networks
could use a warning that dhcpcd offers a more complete feature set.
## FUTURE ##
OTOH, dhcpcd-4 was changed to use the same variables as dhclient so as to ease
integration. NetworkManager is mentioned as an example on
http://roy.marples.name/dhcpcd
