I tried the iwlist command you mentioned last night. It does appear to work as
you explained, ie. an initial scan without the essid parameter shows a hidden
network, but then performing an iwlist with the ESSID to probe, a second(?)
cell appears showing the same network, but with the ESSID set. Sometimes there
is a delay before the named cell appears - perhaps the negotiation happening?
# iwlist eth1 scan | grep ESSID
ESSID:"<hidden>"
ESSID:"DOUGAL"
ESSID:"BTHomeHub-9A01"
ESSID:"BTHomeHub-0CDF"
# iwlist eth1 scan essid Wibble | grep ESSID
ESSID:"<hidden>"
ESSID:"DOUGAL"
ESSID:"BTHomeHub-9A01"
ESSID:"BTHomeHub-0CDF"
ESSID:"Wibble"

I get the same behaviour on 10.3, incidentally.
