Alberto, you want to post that suggestion to the opensuse-gnome mailing list,
so it can reach someone with authority over such a decision, or at least to be
read by the community, gaining the needed traction to get the attention of said
authority. My scope is only the yast2-gtk SVN: I don't integrate it into
opensuse, I don't even package it.
Since I'm not subscribed to the mentioned mailing list, allow me to come to the
yast2-gtk rescue here. :) Note though I don't care much if yast2-gtk gets
stripped out of opensuse: I feel responsible in some way to keep maintaining
it, so you would take a burden out of my shoulders.
First let me address the quality complaint, since that one gets personal. ;) If
you look at a bunch of the ugly reports, most of them should have been from
during the 11.0 development phase and fixed promptly. The fixes were just left
out of the final release as I guess the builds were based from some 11.0
branch. But true enough, yast2-gtk will always be at a disadvantage and more
prone to bugs, since I don't continually follow the changes to the Yast UI
framework, unlike the Qt maintainer, which is the same that makes the said
changes to the framework, which we sometimes have to go to longer extents to
support in gtk. I personally think our code base is superior though, and an
indicator of that is that it is much smaller in size due to its reusability in
design of which Michael Meeks is to be complimented for.
I guess the most outstanding argument in favor of the -gtk interface is the
accessibility support. Our constituency is probably pretty small here -- I only
remember getting feedback from one user who is completely dependent on it --
but it's a pretty exciting thing to offer nevertheless. I know Qt4 was going to
support ATK, so that might not be an unique selling point by now.
The integration with Gnome is admittedly lacking, which would require some
fundamental work to tackle, but there is potential for that, and there is
already some small additions. The most substantial differences are the package
management, and in SVN the wizard subtitles. However, there is only me to give
some breadth to -gtk, so it has been stagnating, and may die off in the future.
The Qt UI has been stale for a long time -- those guys were very quick to
dismiss any feature request --, but it got a lot of attention on its last
installment, and it seems promising.
As you say, Qt4 theming is better integrated with Gnome now, offering a
Clearlooks theme. I have read there is actually a Trolltech project to make Qt
using GTK to render itself. I wish they would have looked at this toy of mine:
http://gtk4qt.sourceforge.net/ . ;)
Not sure what to add. I wish people could check the SVN version because I think
it's much more reliable, but if they're having problems with the GTK UI, it's
not reasonable at all to drop it, and it might be inevitable in the future.
Please post a reference to this bug there, or just a copy of this post (with my
email, if someone wishes some information). Thanks!
