This happens on /dev/console only. After the system is up and the
virtual consoles are established no COLUMNS nor LINES is set, simply
do
ps aex | grep mingetty | grep COLUMNS
to see this.
Only on a serial system console the kernel actual does not know which
size the console has. Then COLUMNS is set to 80 and LINES is set to 24.
There is no method to determine the correct size of a serial terminal
that is that the ioctl TIOCGWINSZ used by e.g. stty fails.
At least I'm not able to reproduce your problem on a normal vga console
as I always set 8x8alt on all none frame buffer system I use (most test
system around here). It works as it should. It would be interesting to
know if
stty size
is able to report the correct size of your console device during boot.
