I also thought, that the umlaut bug in openSUSE 10.3 is caused by some single
broken manual pages. But both manual pages man(1) and strftime(3) are in
ISO-8859-1.
There is also a curios situation with man(1). "man man" and "man
/usr/share/man/de/man1/man.1.gz" shows the umlauts correctly:
[...]
1 Ausführbare Programme oder Shellbefehle
[...]
But if I copy /usr/share/man/de/man1/ls.1.gz to /tmp (or to an other path), it
does not work anymore:
$ cp /usr/share/man/de/man1/man.1.gz /tmp/
$ man /tmp/man.1.gz
[...]
1 Ausfhrbare Programme oder Shellbefehle
[...]
Does "man /tmp/man.1.gz" works correctly on Factory?
How does "man" (or related tools like troff) configure the character set?
Probably some automatic recognition is used, which does not work in all
situations.
