indeed, bash-completion was installed. after removing it bash seems to behave
fine again. thanks for the pointer to bash-completion!
but why did bash-completion get installed ? I've updated from 10.3 to
11.0-beta1, and in 10.3 there was no bash-completion package installed and I
did not ask for it...
anyhow. IMHO the current version of bash-completion is at least nasty if not
dangerous :-(
