making life easier for users is probably not achieved by letting them modifiy critical system resources to their hearts content, without having to spend some thought on what they are doing.
If user = owner s/he will know the root password anyway, so it's not a drawback. If s/he doesn't happen to know the root password, I should think that is so for a reason.
Yes, the reason being you want to not allow them to do everything like install random rpm's off the web.
