Problem also occurred on PowerBook Wallstreet G3 Series II laptop.
Description:
Installation starts and proceeds normally. After initial reboot, installation
initrd and linux32 files are used(because the Old World Macs can't boot
directly and have to use BootX, and there is no provision to copy the new
initrd and vmlinux files to the MacOS drive) for 2nd boot. After choosing
"start installed system", the system hangs up and then reboots after approx 3
minutes.
By pressing Alt-F3 immediately after starting the installed system, I got a
screen full of stuff(unfortunately, I can't see the beginning because I can't
scroll back). I've included what I see on the screen as an attachment.(note:
this is what I got AFTER I managed to finish the install using the following
work-around. I have no idea if this will make a difference or not).
By pressing Alt-F4 this is displayed:
REISERFS (device hda9): found resierfs format "3.6" with standard journal
REISERFS (device hda9): using ordered data mode
REISERFS (device hda9): journal params: device hda9, size 8192, journal first
block 18, max trans len 1024, max batch 900, max commit age 30, max trans age
30
RESIERFS (device hda9): checking transaction log (hda9)
REISERFS (device hda9): Using r5 hash to sort names
init has generated signal 4 but has no handler for it
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Rebooting in 180 seconds..
Work-around: By starting the rescue system and mounting / and the MacOS
partition, I was able to copy the initrd_2_6_22_17_0.1_default and
vmlinux_2_6_22_17_0.1_default files to the MacOS partition and select them with
BootX and then the system started fine and finished the installation.
Suggestion: Since the installation DVD no longer has the linux32 and initrd
files(the have to be extracted from the linux32.gz file), have these files and
then the installed initrd and vmlinux files in a tarball available for
download. This would help not only in this situation, but it would help out on
any installation so that the installed initrd and vmlinux files are available
on the MacOS drive at the beginning. The only problem I forsee would be having
to also have the current initrd and vmlinux files after any new kernel update
available as well. I wish there was a better way to boot on Old World
Macs.....
