I have some news on the issue: It seems that Konqueror is right, while others
like GIMP (TIFF lib), Corel PhotoPaint, and the Windows Image viewers are
wrong; they simply seem to ignore the orientation tag. Most likely the problem
is that some software did not get image orientation right.
Unfortunately the images that show the problem are quite large. I have one TIFF
image with Orientation==6 that appears hozizonally flipped, and one image with
Orientation==8 that appears vertically flipped. I also have a JPEG with
Orientation==1 where the preview is rotated 90°, but the image, when being
opened, is correct.
What I can provide is a batch of eight sample TIFF images (all the same image)
that only differ in the Orientation tag (Note that for 50% of those the image
data is incorrect as X and Y would have to be swapped). I'll attach the small
(70kB) ZIP archive with these test images.
