According to information on Ubuntu forums the madwifi driver for this interface
is working for 32-bit only. See 1-click install at the top of
http://en.opensuse.org/Atheros_madwifi .
For 64-bit you can get the wifi interface working with ndiswrapper and the
Windows XP driver from Acer, at least in my Acer Aspire 5520G. Install the
packages ndiswrapper and ndiswrapper-kmp-default using YaST. Also get the
Windows XP driver from http://www.atheros.cz/ the 64 bit version. The modules
in the zip-file are called ar5211.sys, net5211.cat and net5211.inf. After this
give as root the commands "ndiswrapper -i /<directory where above modules
are>/net5211.inf", "ndiswrapper -m" and "modprobe ndiswrapper". Now you can
configure in YaST the network devices, including the wifi interface. Don't
forget to put ndiswrapper as the module name in the Hardware tab.
HOWEVER!!! My Access Point requires WPA-PSK which requires wpa_supplicant.
Maybe this package is needed always with wifi.
Somewhere there is a bug, most likely in the wpa_supplicant package. The
problem is that only during boot the wifi connections becomes really active and
gets a connection with the AP and an IP-address through DHCP.
If not during boot I can't get the wlan0 interface to work. The command "iwlist
wlan0 scan" shows my AP and other AP's. See the attached syslog what happens
when giving the commands "ifdown wlan0" and "ifup wlan0 -o debug".
wpa_supplicant sees my AP with ESSID="FLM42BJ", but it can't make a connection.
The strange thing is that after making this log and rebooting the wlan0
interface is working and I am sending this through this interface. Obviously no
change has been made to ifcfg-wlan0 in /etc/sysconfig/network.
