The message "request_module:runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c" is the kernel
trying to execute 64-bit binaries with a 32-bit kernel. That doesn't work for
obvious reasons so your system hangs since it can't even load init.
kernel-bigsmp is a 32-bit-only kernel that enables PAE for systems with more
than 4 GB of RAM. Since you're getting this error, I know you're using a 64-bit
installation.
There's a bug here, but it's not a kernel bug. It's a kernel _package_ bug or
yast/libzypp bug.
The AMD64 10.3 install media doesn't contain virtualbox-bigsmp or
kernel-bigsmp. I expect you installed the virtualbox KMP (or another one)
after we released the first kernel update. As a result of the kernel update,
KMPs are rebuilt against the new kernel and they're all published to the update
server. When yast installs a package, it consults the update server to ensure
it's installing the latest version.
What I suspect is happening is that the installer is finding the "bigsmp"
flavor of the KMP and offering it as an installation option. Since RPM allows
i386 binaries to be installed on AMD64 (as it should), this is allowed. The KMP
depends on kernel-bigsmp, which is now available on the update server too.
The solution is to boot into a 64-bit kernel and remove kernel-bigsmp and
whatever KMPs depend on it. You should then be able to boot kernel-default
(64-bit) normally again.
I'm trying to find a way to exclude the 32-bit kernel flavors from being
installed on 64-bit systems. I haven't yet found an "official" way of doing so.
So I'm afraid the temporary solution is all I can offer at the moment.
