Hi Jeff, this is a summary of lots of info:
I bring this to your attention because you are already handling bug 355151
which might be related. NTFS mount problems have been reported many times for
Alpha2.
At least for ntfs-3g, the cause might be an -O1 optimizer issue in gcc-4.3, and
I think it might be the similar with the issues in ntfsresize and ntfsclone
(see bug 355151).
Bug 354113 analyses the issue mostly with ntfs-3g which gets the most exposure
and cannot even mount empty, freshly created partitions created by mkfs.ntfs.
The issue seems to be specific to IA32:
For ntfs-3g, the issue is specific to IA32:
In the package which includes the only workaround beside gcc-4.2 (-O0),
a test case in all archtectures which shows that it is specific to IA32.
The debug info from bug 355151 also shows that i586 is the platform where
ntfsresize & ntfsclone fail.
Interesting:
The data variable affected in bug 355151 and 354113 is the same: lcn (chance?)
BTW: gcc-4.3 triggers also an issue with the latest qemu which is part of
kvm-61. For it, using O1 is enough, but there may be more issues. gcc41 is
fine.
In a %check to verify ntfs-3g after each build, I found that mkfs.ntfs does not
work on ppc, ppc64, s390 and s390x in Factory. That Leaves x86-* and ia64 as
the only platforms where mkfs.ntfs works.
Bug 355151 and bug 354113 also show NTFS kernel-filesystem errors, which may
indicate that even the in-kernel NTFS filesyste might be affected by the
gcc-4.3 problem. AFAIK, we cannot compile parts of the kernel with -O1 or -O0
because
it needs certain optimisations to work correctly.
