python script for testing hal/dbus
Notifying the user that they have to be root to run virt-manager would be a
feature request, and like Lynn says, I think all we can hope for in 10.3 are
bug fixes.
As far as the error when you're running as root, I'm not sure if it's going to
be a hal/dbus problem, a configuration error, or something different about the
way KDE handles the connections.
Let's rule out hal/dbus first. Can you run the attached script from a terminal
window on your Desktop, and let us know the results. If you put it in your
working directory and type 'python halcheck.py' (as root), it will let us know
if hal and dbus are working well enough for virt-manager.
If that checks out, we can double check your gconf configuration files by
looking at your "/root/.gconf/apps/virt-manager/connections/%gconf.xml" file.
In the "<entry name="uris"> section, you should have one stringvalue that
should be "xen" or "xen:///". I noticed in your log that your xen entry only
had 2 slashes. I'm not sure if it matters, but we can rule it out by changing
that entry and re-booting the machine. If it is "xen" you can leave it alone,
but if it's "xen://" let's try changing it to "xen:///"...
Let us know what you find and we can go from there.
