i was searching into this a little bit more and now have a clue what`s the
problem and why some distros boot and some not. EDD is a relatively new feature
and some bios implementations are buggy with this. furthermore, a kernel needs
CONFIG_EDD or CONFIG_EDD_MODULE for that code for being executed. it`s caling
bios routines and may get stuck with that. that may explain why some distro`s
work and some not - some of them probably are too old and don`t have EDD
feature, and some installers may have a kernel where that feature isn`t active.
Apparently, this is not a suse issue, so sorry for the noise.
i have some idea how to enhance this and already contacted EDD "maintainer"
Matt Domsch for discussing my idea.
