It's unlikely irrelevant with the update of alsa-lib.
In the case of mplayer. mplayer seems calling with a wrong PCM device name
"default", which should be "spdif" or "iec958".
I'm not sure about xine, but it seems also opening a wrong PCM. Since VT172x
chip doesn't support 16bit format, you need to wrap via plug layer, that is,
plug:iec958...
You can try ac3dec program included in alsa-utils package. It's not included
in SUSE package (because of possible legal issues), but you can build it
manually. Then run like:
% ac3dec -C somefile.ac3
If this still doesn't work, upload the generated file via "alsactl -f somefile
store", and the output of iecset.
