--- Comment #10 from JP Rosevear
what is SESSION_MANAGER set to ? on SLED10 it is: local/t60sled:/tmp/.ICE-unix/3580
Its "local/linux:/tmp/.ICE-unix/2274" on a 10.3 live CD.
OTOH - this (unfortunately) still somehow manages to do some unfortunate network things, rather than just using the file/pipe ;-)
IMHO the Mit cookie angle is bogus.
Well there were fixes with the MIT cookies to fix problems with domain names changing a couple of releases agao so this seems quite similar. Both the cookies and the SESSION_MANAGER variable manipulation are in xorg code in question. OTHOH I can confirm the "SESSION_MANAGER=" fix, which also spews the error: While connecting to session manager: networkIdsList argument is NULL. Which is the error spewed by libSM if nothing is passed to it as the networkIdsList (libgnomeui passes null) and libSM gets no value from SESSION_MANAGER.
on SLED10 (admittedly), if I bin the 127.0.0.2 reverse lookup; I then get a ~20second xclock startup; but if I do:
SESSION_MANAGER= xclock
All is well. Clearly, we should fix this - but, still the system is broken without a resolveable hostname: ping `hostname` means that even a console login takes many seconds before you get a bash prompt.
