Lubos> Mike: Is subpixel hinting supposed to work?
Only if you install a freetype2 package which has subpixel hinting
compiled in. This is not the case in the freetype packages distributed
with released versions of openSUSE because of patent problems.
If you are sure that the patents are not applicable in your country,
you can rebuild your freetype2 package and enable subpixel hinting.

Lubos> , is there something wrong with it?
At first this code looks OK, it seems to do the same check as a simple
standalone test program I wrote.
But for some reason I don’t yet understand, it doesn’t work.
The experimental freetype2 package available from
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/M17N have subpixel hinting
enabled.
But even if one installs these, one cannot enable subpixel hinting in
the KDE control centre although it works fine if one enables it
manually by editing ~/.fonts.conf.
