ODD was optical disc drive. Anyways, so you have a working system, great.
1. Please post the result of "hdparm -I /dev/hdc".
2. Can you unload the IDE driver and load pata_it821x? ie. Does your root
partition live on a disk connected to a different controller? If so, please
install KOTD and try to load pata_it821x.
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/HEAD/
3. If you can't do #2, you'll need to create separate grub entry with alternate
initrd. Module listto be included in initrd is determined by INITRD_MODULES in
/etc/sysconfig/kernel. After replacing ide driver with pata_it821x, run
"mkinitrd -k vmlinuz -i initrd-pata_it821x". During boot, exit to grub text
mode and edit the boot entry such that initrd= points to the debug initrd.
This way, you can test it while keeping the original working configuration.
