I figured out what the problem was.
I believe it is the problem of my somehow "semi-faulty" processor. First, I
changed from my ( semi-faulty ) P4 3.0Ghz HT to non HT 1.7GHz and all the
problems just ceased to happen. At first I thought it could be some kind ok
kernel/software problem related to HT so, I managed to get my hands on another
HT ( 2.8Ghz ). After changing the this new processor, no problem arose from it.
Just to be sure I tested again with the 3.0GHz one, and all problems
restarted to appear.
The reason that openSUSE 10.2 works like a clock on that processor, is still
a mystery...
Anyway, I changed the processor and all my problems were solved.
Guys, thank you for all you help and time spent on this subject. I know it
can be frustrating to find out that it was a just a hardware problem. Well...
at least we all gained a little bit more experience...
