There's not much to explain: Alias = shorthand for Name. That's it. The fact
that you get the same Aliases and Names is
1) because other application (YaST) has set it so or it has been specified so
in the .repo file you used (e.g. with zypper ar --repo file.repo)
or
2)
you are using only zypper and you added the repo with zypper ar URL alias. This
command automatically uses the 'alias' for both alias and name. Zypper
currently does not have a way to manipulate the name (unimplemented feature - i
have not added it because of the lack of agreement on the subject and more
important work to do), so you can change it only by hand-editing the
/etc/zypp/repos.d/*.repo files (name=<name> attribute).
e.g. the way it should be:
$ zypper lr
# | Enabled | Refresh | Type | Alias | Name
--+---------+---------+--------+----------+-----------------------
..
6 | Yes | Yes | rpm-md | updates | openSUSE 10.3 Updates
..
$ zypper refresh updates
$ zypper list-updates --repo updates
..etc
You don't want to write zypper list-updates "openSUSE 10.3 Updates". You just
want to write zypper list-updates --repo updates
All this name vs. alias problems have arisen because we mismanaged to
coordinate its usage in GUIs and CLIs or to define and agree on their meaning.
This is something to be addressed after 10.3 is out. See also
