Exactly, the CPU supports PAE, so selecting the bigsmp kernel was intentional
(see Fate #159006). The problem with bigsmp on VirtualBox was not known to us
before (BTW: we should also test VMware and other virtualization technologies),
so there is no exception.
So, from my point of view, there are several possibilities:
- revert this feature (again)
- fix bigsmp kernel to work with VirtualBox
- fix VirtualBox to either not propagate the PAE flag or work correctly with
bigsmp kernel
- give us a way to detect that YaST is running in VirtualBox and avoid using
bigsmp kernel in such cases
Stephan, I think it is your call to define the way to go.
