This turns out to be a bug in kismet package.
After installation
#zypper install kismet
running kismet results in:
FATAL: Support for capture source type 'ipw3945' was not built. Check the
output from 'configure' for more information about why it might not have been
compiled in.
After downloading sources from kismetwireless.net and compiling, I get the same
error. Some digging turns out, building kismet has to be done as root
_completely_, while usually ./configure and make would be done as user and only
make install as root.
Afterwards it runs fine with the settings for ipw3945, only change eth1 to
wlan0
cat /etc/SuSE-release
openSUSE 10.3 (i586) Beta1
VERSION = 10.3
uname -r
2.6.22.1-16-default
rpm -q kismet
kismet-2007_01_R1b-50
