Not sure where we stand here, I only have _one_ fstab.
The disk is an external drive which was formatted NTFS initially, I reformatted
it to ext3 and mount point /external. As it was inaccessible for users, I
created some directories as root for several users. This was the state of
affairs when it would not boot without the drive.
After unmounting it and removing it while system up, it would then automount on
plug in and the initial effect did not occur anymore, as I didn't have to mount
the drive manually.
