I would prefer to ask for feedback after 10.3 to actual users, but alright,
will open up a topic on opensuse-ux... (a technical mailing list like
yast-devel is the least place I would want to discuss this)
With regard to the need to document both interfaces, I couldn't care less. Are
you referring to those two text dialogs on yast-qt help menu? That's really
small; our help is just as good anyway. If you mean some technical manual, jut
cover the technical details of package management; show a couple of shots of
yast-gtk if you really must.
«Granted, both Synaptic and sw_single-qt can be considered expert front ends.
That's because the functionality is instantly visible.»
I'm glad you acknowledge that, since that was the goal of the interface. I
really like interfaces with a soft learning curve, where you discover the
functionality as you go. Like opening up a flower. :P
I would think this is common practice in Gnome. For instance, in KDE, they
offer KEdit, KWrite and Kate, from less functional to more functional
interfaces, each interface already pretty fully exposed from the start. In
Gnome, you have GEdit, where you discover and enable functionality as you need
it. I don't agree the two approaches target different people, its just another
workflow.
Btw, I never understood whats of so expert about the yast-qt package selector.
It doesn't offer any feature (like sand-boxing) that you would need some
expertize to understand; seems pretty basic stuff to me, even my little sister
can use it.
«One of the complaints I can understand and support is the fact that installed
packages also appear in the list of available packages, which is kind of
confusing.»
This is the case if the package is both installed and available (which happens
a lot since users usually make use of repos...). We did use to hide them, and
make it possible to re-install the package via a popup menu... Would that be
better?
«In the long term we should make sw_single the expert tool, with a similar
interface in both qt and gtk»
In the long term, I would rather see yast-ui lib better designed so we don't
need specific implementations like this at all.
About the need to have this ready for 10.3, I don't see it as so important. In
fact, I see this as an enhancement request, not as a bug (unless of course the
reporter attaches a medical study in that long exposure to yast-gtk provokes
dizziness, headaches, or baldness :P) But okay, let's see -ux guys complains
and discuss this with the team and consider the roadmap then.
