Hello Matthias.
I cannot try OpenSuSE 10.3 on my laptop as i use it professionally and i can't
afford running alpha/beta version on it. However i have updated 10.2 to use
xorg 7.3 with the packages on the download.opensuse.org site. I don't know if
it is sufficient or not. Here is what i have noticed.
* sax still can't configure dual screen with the "intel" driver (same as i810
then)
* xrandr doesn't work as expected:
Fresh startup, external screen unplugged:
xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 1024
VGA disconnected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 0mm x 0mm
1024x768_60 60.0*
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 0mm x 0mm
1024x768 59.3*+ 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0
832x624 74.6
800x600 85.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
640x480 85.0 72.8 75.0 59.9
720x400 85.0
640x400 85.1
640x350 85.1
Plugging external screen:
xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 1024
VGA connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 0mm x 0mm
1024x600 60.0 58.7
800x600 56.2 58.7
768x576 60.0 58.6
640x480 59.9
1024x768_60 60.0*
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 0mm x 0mm
1024x768 59.3*+ 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0
832x624 74.6
800x600 85.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
640x480 85.0 72.8 75.0 59.9
720x400 85.0
640x400 85.1
640x350 85.1
First problem: my external screen goes up to 1280x1024 (Belinea 10 19 20),
which is not listed.
Trying to set a dual-head configuration:
xrandr --output LVDS --auto --left-of VGA
xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 1024x1024 (desired size 2048x768)
It seems partly the same usual problem with mergedfb not allowing more than
2048 pixels. It is increasingly frustrating with all the nice work going on
composite, not to be able to use it. And new wide screens are already pushing
the 2048 pixels limit. I fear it may be a severe limitation quite soon.
Now, restarting X with the external screen already plugged in:
xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1280 x 1280
VGA connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 0mm x 0mm
1280x960 60.0
1152x768 54.8
1024x600 60.0 58.7
800x600 56.2 58.7
768x576 60.0 58.6
640x480 59.9
1024x768_60 60.0*
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 0mm x 0mm
1024x768 59.3*+ 85.0 75.0 70.1 60.0
832x624 74.6
800x600 85.1 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2
640x480 85.0 72.8 75.0 59.9
720x400 85.0
640x400 85.1
640x350 85.1
It now lists one more mode, 1280x960, not the native one though.
xrandr --output VGA --auto
sets now my VGA screen to 1152x768, no idea why.
I have noticed that switching to the intel driver, KDE thinks it has two
screens when it has only one, and i can see the wallpaper of "screen 1" under
the wallpaper of "screen 2" (which are stacked then), when cloning on an
external screen with a larger resolution than the laptop screen. This may be
solved with KDE 4 though as i have read it supports xrandr 1.2 out-of-the-box.
Is there anything i can do to help to improve the current state of the driver?
xrandr 1.2 looks very promising but on my laptop it is unfortunately not usable
yet.
Thank you very much,
Médéric
