What works and what not at different permission levels is not exactly
specified. The goal in level secure of course is to reduce the number of setuid
root programs that are installed by default. Of course there will always be
someone who needs to deviate from the default. That's what
/etc/permissions.local is for. I'd claim that users of a desktop installation
that is set to 'secure' likely do not know the root password. So even if the
updater applet would be able to check for updates the users won't be able to
actually trigger the update. Therefore the setuid bit would have no benefit.
Maybe opensuse-updater silently shouldn't autostart if the setuid bit is
missing to not annoy users. Additionally a more verbose error message that
explains how to remedy the problem would be useful.
