Sorry, but I disagree. :-) Lets see: 1. bookinfo. According to the TDG (http://www.docbook.org/tdg/en/html/bookinfo.html) this elements allows lots of child elements. One of this is pubdate. From a structural issue this is valid. 2. The content of pubdate. It is a processing instruction, see http://www.w3.org/TR/2006/REC-xml-20060816/#sec-pi So this is a perfectly valid XML. :-) All this tends to a bug in xmllint or xsltproc. In my productive system I run libxml2-2.6.26-0.1 and libxslt-1.1.17-25.1 without problems.
