You don't need it for the vnc sessions that are started automatically when you enable vnc remote administration and connect to the host from a vnc viewer. But please post the verbatim error message you are getting from the vncserver command, just in case you have found another bug there. For the automatically started vnc sessions as described above, vnc shouldn't ask for a password, because they come up with the system's graphical login screen, so you can log in with your regular user name and password. If that's not the case for you, please give more details of what happens when you connect to the machine with a vnc viewer.
