It sounds like you have a solution that works, and I don't have any better ideas. I suppose one other approach might be to defer installation of the new driver until the next time the X server starts -- either when the user reboots or when the user restarts X. At that point (after the X server scripts have started, but before the server binary has started), the old driver could be uninstalled and the new driver could be installed, then server startup could continue. Maybe the X startup scripts could be made to cheaply determine if there is a new driver to install?
