In a chroot environment you are not going to run the SUSE kernel proper - the install will run on the Ubuntu kernel which is probably not what you want. Go for a virtual environment like VMware. There should be complete VMware images available for trial purposes, and the VMware player is available at no cost (although it's not _free_ ;-)
Errm, why not just run from the live eval disk? - "SUSE Linux 10.0 Live version SUSE makes the live version of SUSE Linux available for download as an ISO image. This version runs entirely from the bootable DVD and is not installed on the hard disk. If you want to get to know SUSE Linux or test if your hardware is fully supported, the live version is the right choice for you." http://www.novell.com/products/suselinux/downloads/ftp/mirrors_isos.html Or if you have a little disk space spare you could install SUSE alongside Ubuntu and have a dual-boot system.
