hi all,
got some more information. If I use "fail-safe" login, I can see what's shown on the console: as soon as it passes GRUB, I get the following erroe message:
code: 89 c1 44 29 c1 81 f9 ff e0 f5 05 7f 06 89 f8 29 f0 3d ff e0
console shuts up <0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!
This is with the standard kernel on the original 9.3 installation. I believe the kernel version is 2.6.11.4-20a-smp
any help on how to get the system up and running is very much appreciated,
This does not help much. Try to boot without splash and vga boot options and no "fail-safe" options. Also add early_printk=vga (or if you can connect a serial null modem cable, try early_printk=serial,ttyS0,57600 and console=ttyS0,57600 as boot parameters and do a screen ttyS0 57600 on the other machine connected to the serial cable before you boot. You can then copy & paste the whole kernel panic). With early_printk you should see where the kernel hangs. Try to grab as much of the output until then as possible. You may want to photograph the panic if you cannot set up a serial connection. Thomas P.S.: You should first try a YOU update kernel if you haven't done so yet.
