I agree with you about that. I got the errors after
I've upgraded modutils and initrd using the SuSE rpms.
The 2.6 kernel used is from kernel.org and was
patched with the x86-64-specific patch. I have
another system running SLES 2.6.0-test4 updated
modutils using module-init-tools-0.9.14-pre2.
Could this mean SuSE moutils and initrd not working
with 2.6 kernel from kernel.org?

The invalid format error in 2.6 is still a mystery.
Sounds like missing updates. The modules in 2.6 work in a completely different way compared to 2.4, you need updated modutils and mkinitrd packages because of that. The 2.4 versions can't handle 2.6 kernel modules at all.
