Previous poster suggested that convertall lives in ..../Kde:Extra repository. You will need to add that repository for your openSuSE version, refresh repositories and then you should be able to successfully search and install convertall. While there are other ways to go about searching for application not included in default repositories - I propose this: 1. Always check your current repositories: sudo zypper search convertall Or even better, using Yast That did not work for you as explained above. 2. In your browser navigate to: https://software.opensuse.org/search Search in all distributions for convertall 3. If the seach found the package for your version of openSuSE in experimental or community packages - click "1 Click Install" to add relevant repository and install the package. This way, the package should install all dependencies and will be automatically updated when you update your computer. If there is equal choice between experimental and community packages - I would recommend that you choose experimental as it is maintained by openSuSE. So there is probably better chance of getting help. That being said, investing into good openSuSE knowledge foundation by using manuals, as suggested before me, is the best way to become competent user. Good luck, Tomas

Maybe starting with less would be a first step before adding the keyboard to it all. I can walk you through my little routine (without the keyboard part) to see what comes loose :)

KWallet--how?

I'm going somewhat crazier than usual trying to use Thuderbird Mail because Thunderbird has blown up again, lost my password, won't let me put in a new one, the on-line instructions for fixing it (using Windows) don't seem to work anymore--I think they've "updated" it. I want to use KMail, but it wants KWallet, and I have been defeated trying to install that. Trying it cold didn't work, so I just tried https://duckduckgo.com/?q=short+guide+for+pam_kwallet&ia=web, from benediktg, ran sudo zypper pam_kwallet, and very carefully modified the three files it requests--/etc/pam.d//passwd, /etc/pam.d/login, and /etc/pam.d/sddm. I checked the "new" versions carefully, and I'm really pretty sure they agree with those posted. I put an icon on the desktop that's called "KWallet/Manager," by selecting it from the bowling ball, but when I click on the icon, nothing happens. Any helpful advice welcome. --doug PS--this mail routine from optimum.com is NOT user-friendly, in my humble opinion.

Look like you have broken the installed kwallet somehow. Revert your changes to the last working state, ideally the initial setup. When you call Kwallet the first time it asks for a pgp key, or alternatively 'classic encryption' using a password. If you enter an empty password here, KWallet is basically invisible. I guess thats what you are looking for? Search for "passw" (there is a search box, top-right). You will see a button for "Saved passwords", click that. Search then for the one or ones you want and simply delete them. Or remove all. You can also display them. Once done, close that dialog, and verify that you have defined a Master Password. If not, do create it now. Or is it the master password the one you forgot? I don't know if there is a way to regenerate a forgotten master password, but my guess is, you have to first erase all existing passwords, then try disable "use a master password". I had things working pretty well, but then I had to reinstall the system and some of the things that seemed to work pretty well in the 2019 version seem to be more difficult (or missing) in 2020. Example: I can't find how to stop the screen from going to full size when an app goes to the edge-- the command seems to be missing in the 2020-0826 version. If you look at the original post, it was lgrep, which didn't work. Then I ran grep -i etc. having looked up grep in "Linux in a Nutshell" my Linux reference book. But it turns out there actually is an lgrep in the system, and I installed it and ran it with the same result--nada. I'm beginning to wonder if this was a fluke, but it happened twice. Some older releases of openSUSE didn't run syslog by default, which would explain why /var/log/messages was missing. But assuming, since you mention Konsole and Kate, you are on Plasma Desktop, you have probably removed either a spacer or the Task Manager from the panel. Right-click on the clock on the panel and click 'Edit Panel...'. If you don't already have the Task Manager installed, go to 'Add Widgets' and install it. Otherwise, click on the 'Add Spacer' item, and then drag the new item using its positioning handles to place it to the left of your System Tray. Then close the Configure Desktop thing at the top of the screen using the cross. gumb

When I played on mine and wanted nothing else I just plugged it into my sound card. To get a music-session going here's what I do. NB. I have never once seen a day when things work the same way under Leap and/or Tumbleweed, for example the Audacity GUI for the last year or so has been unusable under tumbleweed. I'm doing this on my g73 laptop under Leap-15.2 1 Start Audacity (2.2.2) to familiarize yourself with it and to test if sound works 'at all'. Observe it has a dropdown list on the left just below the mic icon. This should show 'alsa' as the selected option. Import some audio into audacity (an mp3 or video with sound file) and see if you can hear the output. Don't go past this until you hear music. 2 Start qjackctl (0.4.3).. default settings 'should' work. Open the 'connections' window, see what lurks there, notice that Audacity is not there, it never will be. 3 Revisit Audacity and observe that you need to RESTART it because it's still showing ALSA as the only option on the badly ie. un-'labeled' dropdown list. Once restarted Audacity will also show JACK as an option, select it. Reload the audio file again and test if sound still works, this time using Jack. 4 Shutdown Audacity and qjackctl, just remember that if you need Audacity under jack you have to start it AFTER qjackctl (this applies to just about everything). 5 Start VLC (3.0.11.1) to familiarize yourself with it and to test if sound works 'at all'. Import some audio into audacity (an mp3 or video with sound file) and see if you can hear the output. Don't go past this until you hear music. This is the equivalent of #1 above because you have to count your fingers each time after shaking hands with something. 6 Start qjackctl (0.4.3).. default settings 'should' work. Open the 'connections' window, see what lurks there, notice that VLC in not there and never will be. 7 Revisit VLC and observe that you need to (a) set VLC in tools-prefs-audio-output, (b) save setings and (c) restart it. Once restarted reload the audio file again and test if sound still works, this time using Jack. 8 Shutdown VLC, just remember that if you need it under jack you have to have JACK in saved prefs as a prerquisite. This time leave qjackctl running with the 'connections' window left open. HUD: you now have some feel for how jack controlled via the gui qjackctl works or does not work. 9 Start qsynth (0.5.0) the gui front end for fluidsynth. Observe it appears in the qjackctl 'connections' window. NB. Rosegarden could work without jack but will NOT work without a synth (it does NOT have an internal synth) and fluidsynth controlled by the qsynth gui will NOT produce sound without a loaded soundfont. Visit setup-soundfonts to see that a usable soundfont is loaded. If not, work this until one is loadad. HUD: I work with ZynADdSubFX a lot so that's always installed. 10 Start Rosegarden (well here we go again, even if music by some miracle works in suse it's *garanteed not to work for long*). My RG is segfaulting, I don't know how many times I've been through this, for now I'm just gonna press on faking it. Observe that RG has also been recognised and connected in the qjackctl 'connections' window (as usual, it will not be there if you start RG before qjackctl). Also you need to set up studio-managemididevices to match ports to devices. 11 Import some little midi fie into RG, set that track to a midi instrument or to a ZynnAddSubFX voice (the zynn dssi used internally in RG). Try to play the track, are you hearing anything? Don't go past this until you are hearing it. 12 plug in you keyboard, if I remember correctly it should show up in the runing qjackctl connections window. RG should then also make it usable as a source OR as a target. As a source you can play the keyboard and record a midi track in RG (write the shet music) but I'll stop here because I haven't donethat for a long time now. As an exercise you can start qjackctl (0.6.3) under tumblewed, open its now relabelled 'graph' window and then start/stop qsyth and rosegarden a few times observing the automation in the qjackctl window. Don't use Audacity in TW however, the gui is unusable. HTH For music there's an AV-Linux distro, I tried it once but don't know its current status.

If the old computer hadn't died, I'd still be using the (updated) edition of 2019. I managed to get both printers and the scanner working in the 2019 version; not yet working in the 2020 edition. I will repeat this until you understand it. YOU MUST USE THE USER NAME “ROOT” NOT YOUR USERNAME AND USE “ROOT’S” PASSWORD. Until you do this you will NEVER be able admin a *nix system. Certain operations on a Unix/Linux system require the credentials of almighty “root”. Accept this fact of life. A VPN will not stop you from being hacked. It’s mainly used to possibly hide your LAN from hackers. If you use your web browser to connect to a fraudulent site they can still monitor your keystrokes to steal personal information. PLEASE DO NOT USE THEM IF YOU NOT EXACTLY know what you do. as i was following some of your problems, you have up to now NOT the knowledge to use this kind of solutions. try to learn to use the "on board" tools of opensuse. especially "YAST2" its a wonderful tool. you are able to install and remove "all" software you want inside yast. and do much more things in all the yast modules. no need to hack in some special commands inside the terminal. (if you belong to leap) see the mail from carlos with the search functon inside yast-softwaremanagement. if you REALLY need some special software not provided with a new install of opensuse and the automatically installed repository's ask FIRST this list. do not install from a source you found somewhere. as more repos you install as more problem could be. Icon use fails with scanner not found; tried from Konsole—"no devices available" From years-ago: "In dll.conf, make sure that epson2.conf is uncommented" yes, I uncommented that a while ago for this reason. Also, in old PCLOS system, /sane.d/epson.conf line shows net autodiscovery (like in epson2.conf) but not in TW, so added line. Makes no difference. The instructions continued: "Sometimes xsane does not work out of the box and needs some other scan program to 'kickstart' it. It seems that this has to do with the lp (parallel port) module being loaded. Blacklist it (put the line blacklist lp in /etc/modprobe.d in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist) and remove it. (modprobe -r lp)." There is nothing resembling that in /etc/modprobe.d and I didn't mess with it. Tumbleweed is an ever changing environment which has great system stability but must be administered with understanding and knowledge. I use Linux probably for many of the same reasons you folks do: I don't like to put on the Windows strait-jacket--for years it was impossible to avoid the double-click!--try and become an administrator--every year or two they change the code to do so--try and format a flash drive: if it was ever used for a Linux program, forget it! Want to use a writing program? Use Microsoft Word and pay them a fee every year. Pay, pay, pay for software that frequently doesn't do what you expected, but you've already paid for it. There is only one software program that I have ever paid for in Linux: Software Office. An excellent Word Processor, which is probably the most serious app that's most used by me--and I have to save the output in Word format so the rest of the world can read it! (It also has a spread sheet and an app that makes presentation slides. I sometimes get a schedule in spread-sheet format, so it's nice that I can read it without paying MS to let me.) Oh, BTW, there;s now a free version of this software. Why do I use this paid routine instead of Libre Office? For one thing, Libre can throw in some funny black blobs in the middle of your downloaded copy when you go to print it out. For another, it seems to like multi pages on screen at once. No thanx, Libre. So what I need to do here--and btw, I don't see any actual simplification in Leap--I now have it loaded and set up just about the same as TW, with the same printing and (probably) scanning problems--is get the damned printers and scanner to work and I will be a quiet little church mouse until I can actually *contribute* something useful to the crew. Apologies for this long diatribe. I intend to stay with OS--the TW version, since I don't see any real difference in Leap except the lack of ability to update the system without revamping the whole thing every year or so. The problem I have run up against is the same in both systems. It occurs to me, btw, that the instructions on screen have been written by programmers who already know what they are trying to convey; it's like they are speaking to guys like me in a dialect I'm not completely familiar with. A lot of your questions seem to be end-user oriented about a particular application, e.g., IIRC you've had a couple issues with Thunderbird. While there is a chance someone here will know the answer from his/her experience, you'll typically do better by doing what most of us do: Search for the answer where support is provided for the app (in this example, the Mozilla site) or use a search engine like google where you very likely will see your problem and probably the solution found by another user. The focus of the list is more the operating system itself. Additionally, it's helpful to note that the Forums are often the better alternative when it comes to typical end-user questions. That's a main reason the Forums exist. New users frequently share some of the same issues, e.g., with booting or using YaST or setting up hardware (like your printer problem, for which the solution was provided a month ago). The Forums see these types of issues repeatedly, and folks there are prepared (within reason) to invest the time needed to shepherd a user. Often there is already a solution, which can be found using the Search function. The Forums also provide a gui visual structure that captures the entire problem/solution discussion in a thread, easier for the user than an email thread. All that can save a lot of time for everyone, for the user in the present and in the future for other users.
