[zypp-devel] Why is zypper so chatty?
Hi! d64:~ # zypper in kdepim3-3.5.10 Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... Resolving package dependencies... ... The following package is suggested, but will not be installed: kdetoys3 How can this be disabled? I'd like zyppers summary to tell me what will happen, not what wont. I did not disable recommends in order to be bothered with suggestions. ;) And if this is really necessary, please put it at least at the top of the summary, so it can scrolls off the screen, and not at the bottom. But why not a separate 'zypper show --suggestions kdepim3' command, and maybe 'zypper install --suggestions kdepim3'.? -- cu, Michael Andres +------------------------------------------------------------------+ Key fingerprint = 2DFA 5D73 18B1 E7EF A862 27AC 3FB8 9E3A 27C6 B0E4 +------------------------------------------------------------------+ Michael Andres YaST Development ma@novell.com SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) Maxfeldstrasse 5, D-90409 Nuernberg, Germany, ++49 (0)911 - 740 53-0 +------------------------------------------------------------------+ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: zypp-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: zypp-devel+help@opensuse.org

i'd also suggest it'd be helpful to know WHY the package is not going to be installed ... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: zypp-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: zypp-devel+help@opensuse.org

It's already explained: because it's "suggested", not "recommended". It could be argued that people that uses zypper instead of the GUI apps will know about the different levels of weak dependencies. But it's true that it can be confusing if you don't. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: zypp-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: zypp-devel+help@opensuse.org

"The following package is suggested, but will not be installed" does NOT indicate, confirm, or imply that the pkg is NOT being installed BECAUSE it is "just suggested" ... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: zypp-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: zypp-devel+help@opensuse.org

I felt that would be too much text. Currently it says The following package updates will NOT be installed: amarok amarok-lang audacious-plugins boost-devel boost-license1_39_0 cairo cmake DirectFB faac fate ffmpeg .... You can then do 'zypper up amarok' to find out why: $ LANG=C zypper up amarok <cut> There is an update candidate for 'amarok', but it is locked. Use 'zypper removelock amarok' to unlock it. <cut> If the summary ought to tell why, it would be too much info, too much text in there. Like the title would need to say "The following package updates will NOT be installed, because of vendor change, low priority, a lock, or problematic dependencies. Try 'zypper up package' for more details.". Too much IMO. Once people will get familiar with the "not updated" list, the text will start to be annoying. Other solution would be to show "why" after one chooses 'd' (details) in the prompt. I'd like that, but like with other things, i can't do this alone, so if anyone wants to do it, please go ahead. In the meantime use 'zypper up package' if you're curious why the package won't be updated. -- cheers, jano Ján Kupec YaST team ---------------------------------------------------------(PGP)--- Key ID: 637EE901 Fingerprint: 93B9 C79B 2D20 51C3 800B E09B 8048 46A6 637E E901 ---------------------------------------------------------(IRC)--- Server: irc.freenode.net Nick: jniq Channels: #zypp #yast #suse #susecz ---------------------------------------------------------(EOF)---

In that case you're bothered also with recommends which won't be installed (to let you know what you're missing :O). So shell we make it configurable in zypper.conf? [summary] details = version,repo,vendor,... showRecommends = true/false showSuggests = true/false or something like that
And if this is really necessary, please put it at least at the top of the summary, so it can scrolls off the screen, and not at the bottom.
Sure, i already did that for "not updated" list, i can do it for these as well.
But why not a separate 'zypper show --suggestions kdepim3' command, and
I'd rather put that into the 'info' command, but yes. I'll do it as part of the info command rewrite, hopefully in time for 11.3.
maybe 'zypper install --suggestions kdepim3'.?
Sure. Any volunteer to implement this before i get to it? :O) -- cheers, jano Ján Kupec YaST team ---------------------------------------------------------(PGP)--- Key ID: 637EE901 Fingerprint: 93B9 C79B 2D20 51C3 800B E09B 8048 46A6 637E E901 ---------------------------------------------------------(IRC)--- Server: irc.freenode.net Nick: jniq Channels: #zypp #yast #suse #susecz ---------------------------------------------------------(EOF)---

I turned them off, because I don't miss them :)

Maybe plus 2 command line options to overwrite the default just in case someone changes his mind to see it. And/Or just move this info into the detailed summary (the paged one). -- cu, Michael Andres +------------------------------------------------------------------+ Key fingerprint = 2DFA 5D73 18B1 E7EF A862 27AC 3FB8 9E3A 27C6 B0E4 +------------------------------------------------------------------+ Michael Andres YaST Development ma@novell.com SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) Maxfeldstrasse 5, D-90409 Nuernberg, Germany, ++49 (0)911 - 740 53-0 +------------------------------------------------------------------+ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: zypp-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: zypp-devel+help@opensuse.org
