Hello together, I went through our failed packages and I have identified cmsfs, which is really s390x specific. The software has not been updated since around 9 years. Therefore, I wanted to check the IBM website for the support. The latest z/VM version is supporting cmsfs: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/linux-on-z?topic=c-cmsfs-fuse-1 Anyway, we are receiving this error message for openSUSE: [ 99s] *** UNAME says this is a Linux system. [ 100s] cmsfssed.sh: this release of Linux is not supported! @Ihno: Can you check for SLES, whether SLES is also not supported any more for cmsfs? Then we should report it via the Linux Distributions Working Group to IBM. Best regards, Sarah
Hi Sarah, I just took a look at it and noticed that, at least on github, cmsfs-fuse *has* been updated: https://github.com/ibm-s390-linux/s390-tools/tree/master/cmsfs-fuse tells use that the file "cmsfs-fuse.c" has been updated on May 10, 2022. (cmsfs-fuse is part of the s390-tools, of which the latest release on github is v2.29.0 of Aug 4 (this year)) Besides, I just updated my instance and I got version 2.29 of the s390-tools (which *should* also include the latest cmsfs-fuse from last year). Or am I missing sth here? (If so, please let me know what specifically. TIA.) Kind regards, Holger On So, 03 Sep 2023, Sarah Julia Kriesch wrote:

Hi Holger, s390-tools are another package. I ask myself, whether cmsfs is required as a foundation for cmsfs-fuse in the s390-tools or whether cmsfs is outdated and we can remove it, because all is integrated into s390-tools. Best regards, Sarah

I believe, I have found the reason for the error message. We can fix it together tomorrow. :) The kernel version has to be updated in a patch. ^^ Best regards, Sarah

Yesterday I created an issue upstream and the Maintainer has provided the following information about cmsfs: agreed! "This is a silly bug. History: back in the Linux 2.2 days, the CMSFS package included a filesystem driver. The details varied depending on what release of the kernel you were building against. But the FS driver fell out because the author could not keep up with changes to kernel VFS. Eventually IBM wrote a CMS filesystem driver, so the driver function in this package became less needed and all of that logic fell into disrepair. I am correcting it now." The interesting part is the "Eventually IBM wrote a CMS filesystem driver". Good that I can ask them at IBM TechXChange next week, that we will receive a clarification about it then. Best regards, Sarah

Additional oissues found by the Maintainer: I have modified 'cmsfssed.sh' and committed that. It should work with any release of the kernel. Please try it. This upgrades the release to 1.1.11, so I also updated "cmsfs.h". If you confirm that it works, I will cut a release. Other issues: The package should support UTF-8 rather than simply default to ISO-8859-1. (But the EBCDIC side will stay CP1047.) The package needs prototyping (via #include statements). I am embarrassed that this was never done! There should be build logic for an RPM. I will open issues on GitHub for these. Some people are fond of 'cmake'. Do you see any need for that? (I prefer the internet "standard recipe".) -- R; <><
