[yast-devel] PackageKit
Hi there, I was told of this project: http://www.packagekit.org/ They aim to do a common interface for package and patch management for all distributions, which just need to hook their package system as a backend. It doesn't seem to have a text interface, and it could be a problem with regard to the installation integration. It would still be nice to consider it. What do you think? Hi Ricardo! Check zypp-devel@opensuse.org, PackageKit has already been brought up there. It can be interesting especially for updater applets (without requiring user to authenticate as root). We are already digging into this topic. Jiri Dne Wednesday 24 of October 2007 13:59:36 Ricardo Cruz napsal(a):

I'm currently working on the basis of this. You need some updated packages for STABLE to compile PackageKit. I hope to have it running by the end of the week with the yum backend. After that we can look into creating a zypp backend. Should be fun! Ongoings: look for home:joshkress:PackageKit in the buildservice. As soon as the tools are working with yum backend, I will post a howto in the wiki. Are we going to want to use PackageKit for Package Management as well? Ricardo

Yes, as it provides an easy (and community driven) way to make 'role based' systems management happen. When do you expect PackageKit to replace the current package management interfaces? Does it make sense to do any further work on yast-gtk's package selector at this point? Thanks, Ricardo

Whats the roadmap? Something like this I guess: ? * add a zypp backend * extend the backend system so we can expose functionality like Patterns and Languages * improve the gtk and qt interfaces * add a text interface Ricardo

Hi, I just managed to build the latest dbus package that is needed for pk. Unfortunately it wasn't that trivial -- and it's far from perfect, but thoenig will surely improve it as soon as he is back from vacation. I still have some things to fix. Pk compiles in my vm and the errors when running are now different (which means progress ;-) This also means that it's unlikely that I will reach my milestone to install a package using pk with the yum backend. I will continue to work on it over the weekend, as this is really bugging me. Maybe it will run by Monday so I can write up in the wiki what's needed to get PackageKit compile and run in the STABLE distribution. I think the mod-ui ports are more important prority to make all UIs survive change and time :-) Duncan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: yast-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: yast-devel+help@opensuse.org

What are the mod-ui ports? The effort to make yast-ui language independent? Ricardo
