[yast-devel] YCC Icon Labels and Dialog Titles
I admit this is a very minor issue, but I'm suffering from it since quite some time ;) The icon label texts and the title of the dialogs, that get started if you click the icon in YCC are often not the same. Often there are only minimal differences, though. I think they should always be the same, because then the product would look more polished. It would also ease the work of third parties such as documentation writers, software translators, and even support and helpdesk people. Examples (I did not check them all): Icon label / Dialog title =========================================================== Boot Loader ./. Boot Loader Settings Language ./. Languages Software Management ./. Software Manager Proxy ./. Proxy Configuration Firewall ./. Firewall Configuration: Start-Up Support Registration ./. Registration I'm pretty aware that there are different types of YaST modules... -- Karl Eichwalder R&D / Documentation SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: yast-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: yast-devel+help@opensuse.org

Yes, but I too think it is quite minor an issue. I think we will not fix it unless you send us a patch that we could simply apply (after 11.3, as we'll have RC1 any time now).
It would also ease the work of third parties such as documentation writers, software translators, and even support and helpdesk people.
Really? Yes, translators had 2 strings to translate, but I'd expect it to be done by now. Any other problems? -- Martin Vidner, YaST developer http://en.opensuse.org/User:Mvidner Kuracke oddeleni v restauraci je jako fekalni oddeleni v bazenu

Ok, fair request—would have been a nice hack week project for a not-hacker such as me :) OTOH, as long as the string is defined in two places, they will drift apart. We must define the string in one place, from where the other occurrences can inherit it. At the same time, we could think about button labels and there mentioning in help texts.

Yes, sure.

Yes, but sometimes wrongly or confusingly. Only experienced translators know, which icon label has something in common with which (yast) dialog. There was quite some confusion once we changed "package manager" to "software management/manager"...
Any other problems?
As a writer, you often do not know the name of a component. "software management" or "software manager"--that's a difference, but you as a writer must take a decision. That's fine, and then s.o. else will take over "your" file and, maybe, change it ;) Of course, documentation translators must change their texts, too. -- Karl Eichwalder R&D / Documentation SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: yast-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: yast-devel+help@opensuse.org

I think usually they should be intentionally different. The icon label text should be usually one or two generic words which _name_ the module as a whole. In contrast the title of the particular dialog which is shown initially should be usually several words which _describe_ what this particular dialog is about (usually some kind of overview) so that one or two generic words which name the module as a whole are insufficient to distinguish the overview from other dialogs. Perhaps when the module has basically only one dialog and when there are only minimal differences, it may make sense (depending on the particular case) to have the same word for icon label and dialog title - but not in general - and of course never ever "always the same". Maybe. I also thought about it, but I do not want to judge about it (this should be up to the usability guys.). At least, make sure that "Language" does not start a configuration dialog with the title "Language_s_" and "Software Management" one with the title "Software Manager". Even if we do not want to use the same string in both places, we should define both strings in one place to make sure they are nicely in sync. -- Karl Eichwalder R&D / Documentation SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: yast-devel+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: yast-devel+help@opensuse.org
