I installed the "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run" driver for my 5600 FX card on a fresh install (with all the YAST online updates) of SuSE 9.0. Now when I boot, when the kdm starts I get a dead screen. What I do next is restart the X-server via CONTROL-ALT-DEL, and then I get the Nvidia logo and the login screen. When I exit my window manager session, same thing. Dead screen, restart the X-server, I'm good to go. Any ideas on what's causing this ? --Matthew -------------------------------------------------------

I tried to uninstall and then reinstall the driver via NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run. Once the driver is successfully installed, when I go to run "sax2 -m 0=nvidia" (in init level 3) sax starts up to a dead screen. So I just recopied my old XF86Config into /etc/X11 and I'm back to where I was. --Matthew On Thursday 12 February 2004 09:44, Matthew A Tobiasz wrote:

I had the same problem initially, though I am using a different card. (geforce4 MX420) When I tried to run sax2 -m 0=nvidia I would get a module error and would have to run sax2 --reinit in order to get my card to even work again. What I ended up doing and seems to be working so far: I reinstalled the nvidia driver package, ran sax2 with the --reinit flag, then set the sax settings to default for the card (with the driver set to 'nv') and saved the sax settings. I closed sax and manually edited the XF86Config file and changed the driver module for the card from 'nv' to 'nvidia'. The nVidia splash screen showed up when I restarted x, and if I check sax via YaST it shows the correct driver module loaded. ('nvidia') Even though it doesn't show as activated in sax, everything seems to be working fine, and my games (Neverwinter Nights for the most part) are detecting 3D support and running fine with a good framerate. Don't know if you've read this: (link will wrap, sorry) ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/XFree86/nvidia-installer-HOWTO but it helped me out some. Hope this helps. -Ryan

I gave that a try and same result: boots to a dead screen, CTRL-ALT-DEL brings the display back (with Nvidia logo), and when I exit my window manager, dead screen, etc. It's really werid that when the screen is dead CTRL-ALT-DEL brings it back. I'm thinking something isn't being loaded in the right order... I'm trying to figure this out by looking at the logs. What is the difference between these two log files: /var/log/XFree86.0.log and /var//log/XFree86.0.0.log Which on should I be looking at? -Matthew

Hahaha, this was a good one! So, I shut down kdm removed all the XFree86.* files in /var/log/ and then started up kdm again. This resulted in a dead screen. Good. Now I switched back to tty1 and checked out what was going on in /var/log/. Well a file XFree86.0.log had been created. Now I switched back to tty7 and did CTRL-ALT-DEL. Now I see the nvidia logo and the login screen. Now back to tty1 and what's going on in the logs. Well now there are two log files XFree86.0.log and XFree86.0.log.old. I did a diff on them and this is what I found out: I had the monitor hooked up to the WRONG port. It's a dual head card with two DVI ports, so when I connected up the monitor I connected to the closest port. That's why restarting the Xserver brought things back to the SECOND display. For anyone else having issues with Nvidia cards, I would suggest checking out your logs. That's what lead me to my discovery of my user error. Stay Fresh! Matthew

I had the same problem with the XFX FX 5700 Card. I switched to a TI 4200 and it worked fine. No help from Suse or NVidia or XFX Best hope for a later driver update to solve the problem. If anyone discovers the cure please let me know too. Donald Correll
