X.Org 6.8.2 RC1 RPMs for SuSE 9.2 available
Hi The X.Org Foundation is currently preparing a second maintenance release for version 6.8 of their implementation of the X Window System. The code is presently in the beta testing phase. SUSE will prepare update packages for the latest SUSE Linux version as soon as this release (6.8.2) becomes available. In our efforts to work closely with the X.Org Foundation to make their software even better we would like to invite those users of SUSE Linux who are interested in the X Window System to participate in this beta test. This will give the beta version of 6.8.2 a wider exposure, more testing and allow our users to identify and report problems on their hardware early so they may be fixed for the release. To simplify testing I've built X.Org 6.8.2 RC1 RPMs for SuSE 9.2 and uploaded them for download to ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/Xorg/Xorg-X11R6.8.2-RC1/ * Installation instructions can be found in the README (also in this directory). * In case something goes wrong and you need to revert to the original X.Org 6.8.1 RPMs for SuSE 9.2, simply remove the new RPMs with rpm -e <pkg-name> --nodeps and install the old ones from your DVD/CDs with rpm -Uhv <pkg-name> again (RPMs are in /suse/<arch> on the DVD/CD). A package list is in the README. * Notes for testers: Various drivers, modules and other infrastructure got significant updates and need to be thoroughly tested by the community, including: - "radeon" video driver - "nv" (nvidia) video driver - ATI Rage128 video driver - Postscript print driver - Mesa (OpenGL) update to release 6.2 - libXpm security update (CAN-2004-0914) ... and many many other things... * Feedback can be discussed on this list as we don't have an open Bugzilla. Please don't contact me directly or thru the regular SUSE feedback channel. I'll try to discuss the feedback on this list. Please note that there won't be any installation or advanced support for these test packages. Should you experience any problems please refer to the above instructions how to revert back to the version of X that has been shipped with SUSE Linux. Please also note that if you download and install a test version we strongly recommend to update to the released version of 6.8.2 once it becomes available. Hello to all. I have installed all rpm files from site below, then installed them, re-installed nvidia version 6629, configured it with sax2 and all was fine. In X all is fine except if I go to console (Ctrl+Alt+F2/F3/F4/F5/F6) where all is black. My video card is one geforce2 mx400 with 64 of ram. With version 5336 of nvidia, all consoles have a blue colour but then it went corrupt. Of course dist is SuSE 9.2 pro. Hope anybody can have a solution to solve this problem. Nice 2005 for all. So you didn't have this problem with X.Org 6.8.1 of SuSE 9.2?

Doesn't sound much better. Did this work with X.Org 6.8.1 of SuSE 9.2?

Hi all, tested and looks good so far. Details: System: P4 3.0 GHz HT on Asus P4C800 2GB RAM ATI Radeon 9250 ( ATI RV280 5960 ( radeon ) ), 3D enabled Belinea 102005 (Digital TFT) SuSE9.2pro 1. Problem (with 6.8.1) I have the same problem like described in "https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1829" but the flickering and blanking only happens when running 3D apps (tested with glxgears and quake3a). Sometimes I saw the OSD message "Out of Frequency". Changing the resolution with yast: monitors OSD always shows a resolution near to the monitor's default (1600x1200). So if I select 800x600 or 1024x768, OSD tells me something like 1598x1200 and the picture looks awfull. Using a analog TFT, both problems are gone. Updating to 6.8.2rc1 did not solve the problems with the digital TFT until I added "IgnoreEDID" to the xorg.conf. Now I can play quake without problems, but glxgears still sometime blanks the monitor. Unfortunately I did not test the "IgnoreEDID" option with 6.8.1 ... 2. Problems with updating After updating to 6.8.2rc1, the symbolic link "xorg.conf --> XF86Config" got replaced by a new xorg.conf file. Using yast/sax to change settings seems to only modify XF86Config. So I copied the xorg.conf to XF86Config and recreated the link. Now everything seems cool, except: each time I install any software yast wants to uninstall "xterm". Obviously, here are no major disadvantages by installing 6.8.2 but I didn't test any PostScript stuff, xinerama, dual-head yet .. Stefan, thanks for the RPM's ! Burkhard

Ok. Maybe you can get a login at bugs.freedesktop.org and add yourself to Cc of this bug to follow this discussion. I've added myself to Cc as well.
Oops. We do this because for the next SuSE release SaX2 writes xorg.conf instead of XF86Config before. Therefore it would make sense to update to our new SaX2 packages as well. Marcus, could you please update your SaX2 packages on the ftp server for this? ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/SaX2 The current version does not seem to include this change yet. :-(
Now everything seems cool, except: each time I install any software yast wants to uninstall "xterm".
This sounds strange and is something I cannot reproduce on my 9.2 system. Could you please provide the output of "rpm -Va --nofiles"?
Obviously, here are no major disadvantages by installing 6.8.2 but I didn't test any PostScript stuff, xinerama, dual-head yet ..
Ok. Thanks for testing and feedback! Stefan Public Key available ------------------------------------------------------ Stefan Dirsch (Res. & Dev.) I've fixed these for the next build - when 6.8.2-RC2 will be available. This seems to be unrelated to the xterm package conflict.

I don't think so. We would have seen these with the rpm command. Stefan Public Key available ------------------------------------------------------ Stefan Dirsch (Res. & Dev.) As already said, this will be fixed with the RC2 RPMs -when RC2 becomes available.

This didn't happen with X.Org 6.8.1 of SuSE 9.2? Stefan Public Key available ------------------------------------------------------ Stefan Dirsch (Res. & Dev.) Maybe you can verify this by going back to the xorg-x11-server package of SuSE 9.2 (use "rpm --force" for this) ? I want to make sure we don't see regressions in 6.8.2 ... hi, i was following the discussion because since the update to 9.2 my video-out in my notebook doesnt work anymore (with X11). My Card is a build-in i8xx. Is there a chance that the beta will fix that ? (i need that output !) then i will give it a try this week. re, walter Stefan Dirsch wrote:
