Hi Pasi,
i had a similar problem with my Suse 9 too. Did you try to configure your graphics hardware from the command line?
Yes
My graphical SaX2 did not want to give me more than 1024x768@75Hz, but my hardware can do more. I did the following:
sax2 -m 0=i810 -n /dev/mouse -t imps/2 --vesa 0:1280x1024@75
That didn't help either but thanks for the tip. I tried to configure everything from the start once again but problem remains. This flickering is quite annoying :( I tried also knoppix LiveCD but there was same problem. First I start to suspect hardware problmes but like I said earlier, in windows2000 screen resolution is okay, I tried 1280x1204@85 and it worked, normally I use 1024x768@75 resolution in windows. I uploaded XF86Config and XFree86.0.log files to the following location: (because I hate long postings) http://www.saunalahti.fi/~palo2/XF86Config http://www.saunalahti.fi/~palo2/XFree86.0.log I hope somebody can give me a hint to resolv this problem. -- Pasi Palo
Hello Pasi Palo, I had a look at the logfile, and it appears the problem resides here:
(II) I810(0): xf86BindGARTMemory: bind key 0 at 0x07fff000 (pgoffset 32767) (II) I810(0): xf86BindGARTMemory: bind key 2 at 0x07fee000 (pgoffset 32750) (II) I810(0): xf86BindGARTMemory: bind key 1 at 0x07ffe000 (pgoffset 32766) (WW) I810(0): Extended BIOS function 0x5f05 not supported. (WW) I810(0): Failed to set refresh rate to 77Hz.
The extended BIOS function 0x5f05 is used to set refresh rates, as can be seen in the logfile from this line:
(II) I810(0): Will use BIOS call 0x5f05 to set refresh rates for CRTs.
From what I read on the XFree86 webpage, it appears the 845G needs the AGP Gart module to make these functions available. I think your system doesn't have this module or not properly linked, since it gave these messages:
Symbol drmCtlUninstHandler from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.o is unresolved! Symbol drmAgpUnbind from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.o is unresolved! Symbol drmCtlUninstHandler from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.o is unresolved!
Now I honestly don't know how to get the module to resolve, but perhaps someone else on this list knows? If not, ask on the XFree86 mailinglist; they should know. Hope this helps. :) Kind regards, Pieter Hulshoff

Thank you, this helped me a lot because now I found more information from XFree86 mailinglist archives. I found this webpage: http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html Maybe I should try to downgrade my XFree86 to the earlier version I used before the update. Or is there easy way to recompile i810 module with this new XFree86 ? -- Pasi Palo

As far as I know, the i810 module is a part of the XFree86 distribution. The agpgart module is a part of the kernel. I would assume you got an updated i810 module with your new XFree86 distribution (did you get rpms or did you compile from source?). If the agpgart module is available is something you'll have to check in your kernel modules, and perhaps recompile the module. Which kernel version do you use? Regards, Pieter Hulshoff

Latest one from the online update, k_deflt 2.4.21-192 if I remember right. I think I'll try to recompile agpgart module. -- Pasi Palo

I recompiled kernel and kernel modules but it is still the same. Monitor flickers so much that I am been forced to use windows, which is way too big punishment :( I haven't done anything bad to anybody. Any suggestions anybody? I am out of ideas. -- Pasi Palo
