[opensuse-xorg] INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty
Has startx quite for everyone? Searching for the subject string on this group's mailing list archive produces nul. Subject line is the first thing noticed when startx in runlevel 3 fails in 11.4 or Tumbleweed and .xsession-errors is dumped to tty. No such failure occurs doing init 5. /etc/permissions.local has "/usr/bin/Xorg root:root 4711" uncommented and 'SuSEconfig --module permissions' run. What's it take to make startx work again? These comments appear in a susccessful session log as well.
xinit: connection to X server lost
This is your problem. It looks like the X server disconnects, probably because it terminates. Chris -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-xorg+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-xorg+help@opensuse.org

Only after your reply and a minimal Google did the significance of the message register in my brain, which is that no KDE session actually ever started. Turns out there are two general solutions, both found by booting the same system to 12.1, in which startx works, and looking for config differences. 12.1 had no ~/.dmrc, and also had DEFAULT_WM="startkde", while 11.4 had Session=kde-plasma in ~/.dmrc and DEFAULT_WM="kde4". In neither /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager in the comments above DEFAULT_WM is startkde suggested as a possibility. Removing ~/.dmrc or changing its content to Session=default makes startx work regardless whether DEFAULT_WM is set to startkde or kde4. So the problem actually resulted from kde-plasma as a session type, which probably got there as a consequence of this mailing list thread: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2011-04/msg00124.html -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
