[opensuse-xorg] Xorg does not start up
Hello, For almost a week now, the updates in the Xorg repo [http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.1/] do not work for me. When applied, X will not start up - the screen flashes and the system is unresponsive. In order to get X to work again, I need to downgrade to the following packages (from the openSUSE OSS repo I believe): xorg-x11-driver-input-7.4-11.5@i586 xorg-x11-server-7.4-17.3@i586 Once I downgrade, X works perfectly. I have been experiencing this with two different systems, both using openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.2 (also from the openSUSE repo): 1. Custom built AMD Ahtlon64 X2 6000+ using a nVidia 8600GT 2. MacbookPro using a ATI X1600 The following is the only (EE) line that appears in the Xorg.0.log: (II) LoadModule: "freetype" (WW) Warning, couldn't open module freetype (II) UnloadModule: "freetype" (EE) Failed to load module "freetype" (module does not exist, 0) The rest of the log appears to be similar to the log file generated from a successful X session. I believe that in the past, with other repos, that this problem is caused by a refactoring of the RPMs? Is that the case here? If so, what new rpms do I need to have installed? Hello, I'm still experiencing this problem. I've attached the latest (failed) Xorg.0.log file. I know that is is the right log file from the Xorg server build date at the top of the file: X.Org X Server 1.6.0 Release Date: 2009-2-25 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: openSUSE SUSE LINUX Current Operating System: Linux Desktop 2.6.27.19-3.2-pae #1 SMP 2009-02-25 15:40:44 +0100 i686 Build Date: 08 March 2009 11:08:41PM The version that I am using now is: X.Org X Server 1.5.2 Release Date: 10 October 2008 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 Build Operating System: openSUSE SUSE LINUX Current Operating System: Linux DvAlvin 2.6.27.19-3.2-pae #1 SMP 2009-02-25 15:40:44 +0100 i686 Build Date: 03 December 2008 09:21:06AM This issue happens when I update to these RPMs: xorg-x11-driver-input-7.4-31.1 xorg-x11-server-7.4-38.1 X11 will not start up completely. The screen flashes black and I see a busy cursor for about 0.5-1 sec. Then the screen flashes again. This repeats until I kill the power on the computer. Sometimes I am able to reboot the system cleanly if I smash the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys fast enough. But, most of the time I need to kill the power. This is on a machine that uses the nvidia driver from nvidia's repo: nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default-180.29_2.6.27.18_0.3-0.1 x11-video-nvidiaG02-180.29-0.1 As an aside, is there a way to prevent X11 from retrying to startup? Something like 3 attempts then dropping to console?
