Sent this email some time ago to -factory, but didn't hear much, so I'll send it over here too: Users tend to ask about AIGLX quite a bit. Why do we not have this enabled by default, where possible? Xgl is nice and a lot of people prefer it (including myself), but a lot of people prefer using AIGLX too. Having it enabled by default where possible of course also provides the possibility of switching between compiz/kwin/metacity easier too. If not setting it up by default, perhaps we could consider having a script similar to gnome-xgl-switch for setting it up a little more easily for users. Any thoughts? Given that you talk about compiz ... IMHO enabling AIGLX (together with Composite extension) makes only sense for the intel driver (when EXA becomes the default). nvidia supports indirect rendering since the first driver version. Newer releases support the GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap extension, so neither Xgl nor AIGLX is required for running compiz, when the Composite extension is enabled. fglrx requires Xgl since it's own libGL still does not support GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, so AIGLX is here no help at all. radeon/mga: Ever tried to enable Composite with these? I'm afraid these drivers will become rather unstable. Additionally the reverse engineered DRI driver for ATI R300/R400 cards is known to be very unstable. So if at all for these drivers Xgl should be preferred. Proposal for openSUSE 11.0 -------------------------- - intel: enabled AIGLX and Composite by default - nvidia: enable Composite by default Configuration for switching between compiz/kwin/metacity should be part of the KDE/GNOME desktop.
