Does anyone have an idea why my laptop keeps freezing when I invoke simple uses of OpenGLs accumulation buffer function, for example the attached file (from "the Red book")? Compiled as follows, gcc -Wall -O3 dof.c -lglut -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lGLU -lGL -lXmu -lXi -lXext -lX11 -lm -o dof I do not get any core dumps or logs because it freezes so hard and fast. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks, LDB Here is the following configuration from fglrxinfo -t: display: :0.0 screen:0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. This is a well known issue with some ATI cards. I cannot reproduce this here, though, so it seems to depend on the exact card. It actually happens when clearing the accumulation buffer:
glClear(GL_ACCUM_BUFFER_BIT);

Ah that is exactly the answer I was looking for at this point since nothing I do programmatically seemingly eliminates the problem. Well, at least it is settled and I will just have to live with it. :) Thank you Matthias and all for your help, LDB Matthias Hopf wrote:

Hi Lawrence, I am suffering from total crashes of 8.16.20, whereas 8.14.13 is working like a charm. Maybe you want to give it a try. It seems that it is not always the newer that is the better. And, moreover, I submitted a script that enlarged the size of the mtrr to a size that the ATI driver can live with - I had had posted it to the list, you might want to give it a try. Take a look to ALT-F10 whether you find messages like "mtrr settings too small" - I do not know whether there are any shadow effects from this to your issue, but you might want to give it a try. Take care Dieter Am Dienstag, 4. Oktober 2005 14:53 schrieb Lawrence Bowie:

Wow!! Does 8.14.13 work with SuSE 9.3's kernel level? I cannot remember. Also, where can I find 8.14.13? I looked at ATI but they only have the latest version available. I will also try the mtrr setting as well. How did you determine the mtrr setting was not suitable for the ATI driver? Thank you much for the information and I will definitely try your suggestions. Actually, I found the 8.14.13 Linux driver, http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-8.14.13.run Thanks, LDB On Tue, 4 Oct 2005 22:58:31 -0500, Lawrence Bowie wrote
