I think you have to run gtk-update-icon-cache command when you add some files to /usr/share/icons.

Then, when I add a starter to the XFCE4 panel, the OpenOffice.org Icons can be found under "Other" and not under "Applications" no matter where they actually are. It's all a bit confusing, since putting icons or links in /usr/share/icons/hicolor doesn't make them show up, however XFCE4 seems to be gettings its icons from there - what gives?
